A Series of Skeptical Looks

Hey all,

Nothing much new this week — well, there’s plenty new inside my head, but all of that’s relevant to this storyline…soooo…can’t talk about that. Unless you guys really like spoilers.

Honestly, I spend the vast majority of my time in a basement these days. I love it. The absence of natural light can get a bit old sometimes, but it makes me feel like Batman, so it all balances out in the end. Doesn’t exactly get super exciting. It has, however, made me realize just how many Cure albums I have. Almost Twenty hours worth, enough to get through two solid workdays. I should probably be ashamed of myself, but – eh, you gotta collect something, right? I wonder if Batman every listens to the Cure? If anything he’d probably like Pornography. That’s a dark damn album.

Watch this, and then imagine Batman sobbing quietly in a corner. It’s pretty funny. I’m in a really weird mood tonight.

On to a slightly more relevant topic, I’m hoping to get some merchandise rolling pretty soon. I just have to figure out the whole payment thing and then I should be ready to roll. Look forward to buttons, maybe a t-shirt or two, Spritzer heads, and something a bit more all-inclusive. Fun is going to be the keyword. Nobody wants to buy boring crap. So, fun crap — keep your eyes peeled.

J.

Like it says. Between the wedding we need to go to 200ish miles away this weekend, and the beautiful miss FlyKy having a big-time job interview that’s more important than getting this comic done, (as she is the major income in the family. Cartoonists are sponges and layabouts) this -

- is as far as I’ve gotten on this beast of a strip. No crayola’s this time. Hopefully, I’ll be able to finish this up on Monday and post it that night. Although the way things have been going, I wouldn’t be surprised if a tornado swung by and swept us of to Oz for the Tin Man’s birthday party.

I promise that as soon as we get settled and I actually spend more than half the week not driving a couple hundred miles, the updates will be a bit more regular. Yikes.

Thanks for the patience,

J

Hey all, just wanted to drop a line saying that I’ll be posting the newest comic next thursday so I can get a breather and do a bit of unpacking, as well as work on a new project I have coming up. In the meantime, since you guys seemed to enjoy Cephololad sooooo much, I though I’d post a couple of additional drawings, just for fun.

This is one of the drawings in the margin of the last comic, that I used to work out how Billy might draw the character himself.

This is an old drawing of Cephololad before I had a place to use the concept. I still dig the costume, but I’m not sure if the tank still figures into the overall concept. That bastard would be pretty heavy for a kid to carry on his back.

Anyway, enjoy the “supplemental materials”, and I’ll talk at you later.

J.

Well, it’s been a long week, but FlyKy and I are back in the Midwest. Both of us a battered, bruised, cut, sore, but not too much worse for the wear. She had a bad sandwich and got sick six hours into the (unexpectedly) nineteen hour long drive. I almost hit a deer two hours away from Chicago, but was saved by my twitch reflexes – honed to impressive accuracy from countless hours of gaming.

Glad as we are to be able to rest, Comics are comics and won’t let go of my brain. Once I dig out my supplies, I’ll hopefully be able to get you guys a new comic by the end of the weekend. I’m excited to be getting back to drawing after far too many days of back-breaking labor. Hoorah!

Hey all, just wanted to drop a quick line filling you in. The comic is still on pace for my usual late update this Thursday – but it’s possible I might get behind. You see, we’re moving about 1200 or so miles this time next week, and there’s a fair amount of packing and planning going on. I’ve got a strategy to keep up my updates, but it’s still a precarious thing. Just bear with me while I uproot my life and head westward to the Chicago suburbs.

Meanwhile, I’ve slowly been tackling a redesign strategy for the website.

This is the new header I’m working on. It’ll be a bit more filled in, maybe some color, but you get the gist of it.

And this is the icon that came out of playing around with the typography I made for the new title.

What you guys think? Feedback is good thing…

J

It seems like comic artists don’t get their due when they pass on, unless they’re one of the super-stars of the genre. Frank Frazetta was eulogized fairly widely when he passed on last month, but I doubt that his one-time collaborator Al Williamson will get the same treatment, even though he was one hell of a talented artist.

I've held the original artwork for this page in my hands. MY HANDS.

I won’t get into his life story or anything, just to say that he, and other comics artists of his generation, presided over (in my opinion) the artistic and popular height of the medium. He not only played a part in EC comics storied rise and fall, but was taught by (and possibly worked on the Tarzan comic strip with) comics legend Burne Hogarth.

But the most important thing he did, in terms of influence on my life, is this:

Heaven.

I don’t remember when I got it, but this comic adaptation of Jedi was probably more important to me than the actual Star Wars movies. I read it over and over and over again. It may still be in my mom’s house somewhere, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it flat-out disintegrated from being read about a billion times.

So, go out and buy Al’s comics. You’ll love them.

Later,

J
